Let's talk about the 3 major risk factors for dementia found by a recent study!*

More and more, it appears that modifiable risk factors are involved in Dementia and could be addressed to lower the risks of developing it.
At the same time, it's important to understand that dementia develops way before the symptoms appear. It is therefore important to pay attention to these risks throughout life!
▶ A diagnosis of diabetes, the amount of nitrogen dioxide in the air and how often someone drinks alcohol 🍷 — from never to daily, or nearly every day — were found to be the 3️⃣ most detrimental risk factors to the most fragile regions of the brain 🧠 .
▶Diabetes, air pollution and alcohol consumption each has an effect that is about twice as much as the other leading risk factors which are: sleep, weigh, smoking and blood pressure.
➡ The facts: 55 million people live with dementia around the world and it is expected to ↗ up to 153 million by 2050, according to WHO.
➡ Dementia is the loss of cognitive function, and symptoms result from brain neurons losing connection to other brain cells. Everyone loses neurons but the loss is more significant in dementia patient.
➡ Prevention is key and involves increasing or maintaining cognitive reserve. The Lancet describe what could be the preventive actions that people could take all along their life.
- 🥗 Try to eat a healthy, varied diet to lower your blood sugar. Increase the color of the raimbow in your plate: 🍓 🍊 🍋 🥑 🍇 🍆 , avoid ultraprocessed food 🍔 🍿 and lower your consumption of sugar 🍡 🍰 🥤
- Lower your consumption of 🥃 🥂 🍷 and 🛑 🚬 🚭
- Maintain frequent exercise 🏃‍♀️ 🚴‍♀️
- And boost your brain like a muscle 💪 🧠 by continuing learning, reading, creating! 📚 🎨 👩‍🏫
- The point that is often forgotten, is the social connections 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 👀 🙌

Let’s talk about toxic chemicals!

There is a LOT of discussion about toxic exposures in the news these days, but this topic can be abstract for many, so let’s dig in.

Environmental toxins are substances that can cause or are linked to adverse health effects. They can be found in everything from the air we breathe, the water we drink, the foods we eat, the products we buy, and even the homes, schools, and buildings we spend time in.

They can be naturally occurring (think: lead, arsenic, mercury) or man-made (think: pesticides, plasticizers, PFAS).

We have decades and decades of research that many of these exposures are linked to serious health issues including:

❌ Infertility
❌ Altered fetal development
❌ Developmental issues in children
❌ Early onset puberty
❌ Cardiovascular disease
❌ Metabolic issues like weight gain, insulin resistance, and diabetes
❌ Cancers
❌ Immune system dysfunction, including autoimmune disease
❌ PCOS, uterine fibroids, and other hormone-related issues
❌ Neurological conditions like Alzheimer’s and dementia
❌ Allergies & asthma
❌ And so much more…

On our path to being as healthy as possible, we have to look beyond just the basics of good nutrition, fitness, and good sleep (although those all matter a lot!) and start minimizing our exposure to as many of these chemicals as possible.

This is a BIG topic, but I’ll be sharing more about specific exposures going forward. While a lot of people talk about these toxic exposures in a way that makes people fearful or panicked, I’m all about having a balanced, evidence-based conversation. No fear here!
